Cottage Lake Elementary
This new 35,000 square foot classroom and library building for the Northshore School District emphasizes a number of green design elements . The wood and steel framed structure was designed to incorporate many floor and roof penetrations for the distribution of natural light and ventilation. The project also included a new covered play area.
Sustainable elements include site orientation, extensive daylighting, natural ventilation, and a water infiltration system used to reduce energy usage and increase user comfort. Design incorporates all on site stormwater infiltration with raingardens, and impervious areas were reduced with the minimized building footprint and paved areas. Most areas eliminated the need for artificial light with the incorporation of a central, two-story shaft for daylight and passive ventilation.
