DSHS Behavioral Health Community, Clark County

Washington State is shifting toward a progressive model for long-term psychiatric care, moving away from large, centralized facilities in favor of smaller, community-based treatment centers. The 48-bed Residential Treatment Facility in Clark County is one of five projects planned for the Department of Social and Health Services, designed using the Behavioral Health prototype developed with BCRA Architects. The facility consists of three 16-bed structures on a single site.

Delivered under the GC/CM method, the design prioritizes safety, security, and dignity for both patients and staff. Beyond standard anti-ligature protocols, sightlines, materials, and open spaces enhance passive security while fostering a calm, welcoming environment. Designed for net-zero energy use, the facility reflects a commitment to sustainability. Lund Opsahl collaborated closely with the design team and builder to develop a cost-effective structural solution, maximizing community benefit.
