Mukai Barreling Plant Stabilization

Lund Opsahl provided structural engineering services for the historic Mukai Fruit Barreling Plant, located on Vashon Island. Built in 1927, services included an evaluation of the structure and recommendations for immediate and future upgrades. The facility is wood framed and is supported by wood beam and post foundation.

Community support to preserve this building is strong, with an interest to use the space for community events.

In 1993, the plant and associated buildings became the first location with Japanese American history to be designated as a King County landmark and was registered on the National Register of Historic Places. It is also known to be the oldest industrial building designed by a Japanese American. The “Friends of Mukai” are an active group, seeking to restore this cherished farmstead that included a strawberry farm, Japanese gardens, and the barreling plant.
