With a new stop for Tacoma’s Light Rail extension located adjacent to the site, the demand for medical services have increased in Tacoma’s Hilltop neighborhood. Lund Opsahl designed this three-story, steel-framed medical office building addition with secured grade-level parking totaling 33,400 square feet. The creative use of cantilevered framing on the addition eliminated the need for the dropped footings that would have been required in order to avoid surcharging the existing building’s basement walls. Long-span steel beams with web penetrations above the parking area were coordinated to accommodate mechanical needs while matching the existing floor-to-floor height of the adjacent building, preserving needed parking space and simplifying circulation between the two buildings.
